Retranscript

Every call on your Mac, written down.

Retranscript records your Teams, Zoom, Meet, Slack and FaceTime calls, has some of the most accurate models transcribe them and runs your prompts on each, all on its own once set up. No bot joins the call.

Free app, no subscription. An hour of call costs 3¢ to 39¢ to transcribe, with your own OpenRouter or Gemini key.
For macOS 14.4 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Notarized by Apple.

The Mini Recorder, a small floating panel, over a video call: it records the call, saves it, transcribes it, and has a model write the summary.

It starts when the call does.

Turn on the three switches in the Recording menu once. From then on, every call records itself, is transcribed a minute after it ends, and gets its summary written, without you opening the app.

Rather stay in charge? Leave them off: the Mini Recorder appears when a call starts, and recording is one click.

  1. Call detected

Google Meet started in Chrome. With calendar names turned on in Settings, the recording takes the name of the event in your calendar, “Weekly sync”.

  2. Recording

Your microphone and everything your Mac plays, each on its own track, lined up to the sample.

  3. Call ended

Both tracks are mixed into one .m4a file in your Documents folder.

  4. Transcription

It starts after a one-minute countdown in the Mini Recorder, in case you'd rather not.

  5. Transcript saved

44 minutes, 4 speakers, every word timed, by Gemini 3.5 Transcribe.

  6. Summary

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 and saved next to the recording, because it's the prompt you chose to run after every call. The follow-up email is one click on Ask away.

What the call leaves in your Documents folder: four files, one name.

Every word, and who said it.

Frontier models do the listening. Gemini 3.5 Transcribe tells the voices apart and times every word. Prefer another? Choose any of OpenRouter's 24 transcription models, from Deepgram Nova-3 to Whisper, for every call or for just one.

  • Put names on voices. Hear a few seconds of each speaker, then turn Speaker 2 into Malik, in the transcript and in its summary.
  • Long calls stay whole. They're sent in parts that overlap by a few seconds, then joined word by word, so nothing is lost or doubled where they meet.
  • Teach it your words. Give it the names, products and jargon to listen for, and the languages you speak.
  • Old recordings too. File › Transcribe Audio File… takes M4A, MP3, WAV, FLAC and the sound of MP4 or MOV videos.

Artificial Analysis hasn't measured the hosts OpenRouter uses, and measured 10.1% on another.

Then turn it into whatever your work needs.

Write a prompt once for what your work needs: a summary, the decisions, notes for your CRM, an interview scorecard, the follow-up email. Or start from Summary and Follow-up Email. Each prompt can use its own model: Claude, GPT, Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek, any of the 464 text models on OpenRouter, or the Claude Code you're already logged into.

  • Off until you say so. A transcript goes to a model only when you click Ask, or once you turn on Analyze Transcripts Automatically.
  • Answers are files. Each one is saved as Markdown next to the recording, and names the model that wrote it.
  • Tune each prompt. Pick how much effort the model puts in, and the longest answer you'll pay for.
Settings, Prompts tab: the Summary prompt, with its model picker open on Claude Opus 5.5, among recommended and favorite models.
A minute after the call ends, what the Summary prompt wrote, saved as Markdown next to the recording.

Summary

The launch on the 14th holds if the client signs off on Tuesday and the product photos arrive by Friday. Jo is chasing the photos; Malik is preparing a fallback.

Decisions

  • The launch stays on the 14th. Whether it slips is decided on Friday.

Action items

  • Jo: call the client's marketing lead today, ask for the photos by Thursday
  • Malik: draft a plan B with stock images
  • Ana: decide on Friday whether the launch slips

No subscription. Pay for the hours you record.

The app is free. What you pay for is the models, at their price: an hour of call costs from $0.03 to $0.39 to transcribe, depending on the model.

Your own keys

Connect OpenRouter in one click: approve a key in your browser and it comes back to the app, with every model on OpenRouter behind it. Or paste a Gemini or Anthropic key, or let Retranscript use the Claude Code you're logged into. You pay each provider directly, and your keys stay in your Mac's Keychain.

Retranscript credits Coming soon

No accounts to open with model providers, no keys to copy. Sign in with your email, add credit, and every model is ready. Audio and transcripts pass through without being stored.

Your calls stay files on your Mac.

No account to create with your own keys, no cloud library, no server of ours in between. Here is everything that leaves your Mac, and when.

The audio
Goes to the transcription model you chose, in parts of a few minutes, once the countdown is over. Gemini deletes each part from Google's servers as soon as it's transcribed.
The transcript
Goes to the model of a prompt when you click Ask, or after each call if you turned that on. Nothing else is sent with it.
Everything else
Stays put: recordings, transcripts and answers in your Documents folder, your keys in the Keychain, the activity log in your Library.

When your rules are stricter

Zero data retention

Turn it on in your OpenRouter privacy settings, and everything Retranscript sends through OpenRouter, the audio and the transcripts, goes only to providers that keep nothing once they've answered.

16 of the 24 transcription models on OpenRouter qualify, MAI-Transcribe 2, Voxtral Mini Transcribe and Whisper Large V3 among them, but not Gemini 3.5 Transcribe; the default, with your own Gemini key, goes to Google directly, under Google's terms. For prompts, 257 of the 464 text models do, Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol included.

In the EU or the US Coming soon

On OpenRouter's Business and Enterprise plans, requests can stay in the European Union or the United States: decrypted, routed and answered there, never leaving it. Retranscript will send transcription and prompts alike through the region you choose.

With fewer models to choose from: in Europe, 1 for transcription (Voxtral Mini Transcribe) and 69 for prompts; in the United States, 7 and 111.

Made for the Mac, and only for the Mac.

Retranscript is written in Swift with Apple's own frameworks, and follows the Human Interface Guidelines down to the menus. It behaves like the apps that came with your Mac.

  • Every command in the menus. ⇧⌘R starts recording, ⌘F searches every transcript, ⌘Z undoes a rename or a trip to the Trash.
  • Nothing to install in your audio. No virtual audio driver and no screen recording permission: the system audio comes from Core Audio itself.
  • At home in your settings. Dark Mode, Increase Contrast and VoiceOver work throughout, because it's built from standard controls. Switch your Mac to Dark Mode: this page follows, like the app.
  • Signed, notarized, up to date. Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, it checks for updates once a day and verifies each one before installing it.

Questions before you download.

Does a bot join my calls?

No. Retranscript records on your Mac, from your microphone and from the sound your Mac plays. Nobody sees a new participant, and nothing needs to be installed in Zoom, Teams or Meet.

Which calls does it notice?

Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Slack huddles, FaceTime and WhatsApp, and calls in Chrome and Safari, where it tells Google Meet from Teams by the tab's address. You choose which apps it watches.

Should I tell people I'm recording?

Yes. Retranscript doesn't announce itself in the call, and recording laws differ between countries and states. Let people know, and ask for their consent where the law requires it.

What do I need to start?

A Mac with macOS 14.4 or later, and one model to transcribe with. Connect OpenRouter in one click, or paste a Gemini key from Google AI Studio. For summaries, you can also use an Anthropic key or the Claude Code you're already logged into.

What does it cost?

The app is free. You pay for the models you use, at the provider's price when you bring your own key. An hour of call costs about $0.03 to transcribe with Whisper Large V3, $0.10 with Grok STT or MAI-Transcribe 2, and $0.39 with Gemini 3.5 Transcribe.

Can I transcribe a recording I already have?

Yes. File › Transcribe Audio File… takes M4A, MP3, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and the sound of MP4 or MOV videos. The file you chose isn't changed; a copy joins your recordings.

Does it work with AirPods or other headphones?

Yes. It records what your Mac plays, whatever you listen on, and by default the microphone the call app is using.

Where are my recordings?

In Documents › Retranscript, or a folder you choose. Each call is an .m4a file, a .txt transcript and a Markdown file per answer, all with the same name, so you can open, search and back them up like any other file.

Is there a version for Windows, Linux or iPhone?

No. Retranscript is built on macOS's own audio and window frameworks, so it only runs on a Mac.
